The Arabesque® Bookends with Engraving of Geometric and Arabesque Window Design from the 14th Century Mamluk Mosque of Amir Qawsun

$154.00

Amir Qawsun was a Mamluk prince who came to Cairo in the 14th century via a Mongol caravan. Upon arrival he met the great Mamluk Sultan, al-Nasir Muhammad. The Mamluks were a slave dynasty and originally did not organize their hierarchy through hereditary rule. So after arriving in Cairo, Qawsun was bought by the Sultan and then he rose in the ranks and became a prince of the court.

The Amir built a grand mosque in Mamluk Cairo. Most of the mosque was destroyed, several of the carved stucco windows of the mosque survived. This beautiful engraved wood artwork on the bookends made by The arabesque depicts one of those beautiful medieval Mamluk stucco windows of the 14th century.
