This t-shirt features a medieval 10th century Abbasid camel motif with the words "We Are All Migrants" written beneath it. We chose the camel for this design because it was the main means of transportation used in the medieval Middle East. In fact, for a long period of time the Roman invention of the wheel wasn't used in the premodern Middle East and North Africa because camels and transportation via caravans had become a more efficient way of land travel. Beginning from the classical period, camels also had a significant influence on Arabic literature since they had been the prized animal of Bedouin desert culture. They also found there way into the art of the medieval Islamic world. The camel motif we chose on this shirt is from a lusterware bowl made in Abbasid Iraq in the 10th century. The original bowl is currently housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This design reminds us that we are all migrants. We are all travelers in this world and as human beings we will always be migratory in nature. Therefore, this shirt is meant to remind us of our impermanent state and that this holiday season we should care, love, and respect every citizen of the world. If a refugee stands at our doorsteps let us try our level best to give them a home. We should welcome one another despite where we come from or how we look. No one is illegal. We are all migrants.
