When Roger II, the Norman king of Sicily, built his famous Cappella Palatina 1154 in Palermo, Sicily he employed artists from Fatimid Egypt to paint his ceiling. The image we burned on this 8 x 10 x 1 wooden plaque comes from one of the many paintings and depictions on the beautiful wooden ceiling of this chapel. This particular image is of a musician from the court playing his lute. Images like these were part of the royal and medieval Near Eastern and Islamic visual vocabulary of the court.
